ROI Dexter Cattle Group Bulletin/Article

The ROI Group held their AGM on 11/02/18 with an attendance of 40 members. Having reviewed our activity of 2017 where we exhibited Dexters at 9 shows and held 4 regional meetings which also included a farm walk to visit a members Dexter Herd.

We had a very successful Beef kill where we supplied 86 Dexter Steers to ABP Factory in Nenagh to be sold through Aldi Supermarkets.
The price paid was €5.50 per Kg dead weight.

The ROI Group currently have circa 80 members out of a total of 160 DCS members. Our plans for 2018 include showing at some of our Agricultural Shows in order to promote the Dexter Breed to the public and to prospective members.
There are now 3,500 PBR Dexter Cattle in the ROI & 1,700 in NI.

Our AGM included 3 short talks on;
  (1) Conservation Grazing by Mr Tom McDonald.
  (2) Our New Website by Ciaran Culkin (our second attempt) & thanks to CC we now have an excellent website. (www.dextercattlesociety.ie) and
  (3) Showing by Mrs Susan McCullough.

Mrs Denise Hasshill President sent her regrets but hopes to attend the Munster meeting on 17th June 2018 in Charleville, Co. Cork her home county.

Council DCS
The ROI Group is now represented on the DCS Council by myself, Sean Flannery, which is an interesting experience and a learning curve.

A root and branch review is currently being carried out on the finance and administration policies of the Dexter Cattle Society which hopefully will be to the benefit of current and future membership. Credit and thanks are due to the executive officers of Council who are working hard to remedy the current situation.

This year 2018 we plan to have 4 Provincial Meetings
    (i) Leinster on Sat 14/04/18 to Mr Peter Bryans Herd in Donabate, Co. Dublin.
(ii) Munster on Sun 17/06/18 to Mr. Conor Cagneys Herd in Charleville, Co. Cork.
(iii) Ulster on Sun 26/08/18 to Mr. Colin Murrays Herd in Belturbet, Co. Cavan.
(iv) Connaught on Sun 14/10/18 to Mr. Liam Gavins Herd in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

All Dexter Breeders are welcome whether members or prospective members.  This is a great opportunity to network with other Dexter owners and is an opportunity to Buy and Sell.

Remember to buy only Pure Bred Registered Dexters. Look for the Green Passport from the DCS before making a deal to buy. The vast majority of Dexters are PB Registered so there is no need to buy unregistered animals.

It is vitally important to Register all calves that you breed with the Dexter Cattle Society, UK.

Yellow Certificate - Birth Registered only
